This week, we began our new classroom theme, Cities. We will be focusing on the development of urban environments from the perspectives of both social studies and science. The students will be creating a model of a city in class. In writing workshop, the students are continuing their work on their point of view stories. I have been delighted with their progress so far, as well as with how comfortable they have become with the writing process, including revision through multiple conferences. The intermediate math group is finishing the unit on addition and subtraction of fractions, and a test will be given on Monday. Our next field trip will be on Tuesday, March 23, to Goucher College to see "Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad". Please check your email for information about Monday's Spring-a-Licious party.

NOTES from the Intermediate Grades Classroom…
The students are wrapping up the third quarter by finishing their point of view stories in writing workshop, reading historical fiction and biography in reading, and reviewing nouns, verbs, and adjectives in language arts. We have launched our new theme, cities, by creating a rural village that will soon develop into a bustling city. The intermediate math group completed the unit on fractions and has moved on to geometry. The field trip to Goucher on March 23 was a long-awaited success, as we finally saw Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. I was pleased to see how familiar this topic was to the students, as we read about Ms. Tubman back in February. I am excited to move into our unit on writing poetry, which will begin next week.

Intermediate Spanish: We worked on our picture dictionaries by reviewing H and I words. The students were provided J and K and asked to complete these for next week. We also practiced the months in Spanish. The students are asked to fill out the sheet on the birthdate for their mom and dad and practice repeating the sentences. They will have to recite the sentences orally on Tuesday. The students are welcome to fill out the sheet for any other family members they live with. Please remind your child that the stoplight sheet is required to be in class each week. Please remember to check your child's stoplight sheet to see how he or she did in class. Remember that students can practice pronunciation of words and review vocabulary using http://www.frenchspanishonline.com/beginnerspanish/freespanish.html

Intermediate Art: We are working with clay and plaster in our current lesson. The class has studied radial balance, texture and relief sculpture. We have formed clay molds and created a radial design using textured objects. This Friday ( 3/26) we will be pouring the plaster to set for the weekend. We are very excited and anticipate fantastic results!
